Tom Martin

co-owner & Head Coach

Tom has over 8 years of experience within the fitness industry from managing gyms, owning a personal PT business and working with sports teams.

Tom has been coaching crossfit for 4 years and partaking in Crossfit competitions for the last 2 of those years.

“I love being part of everyones journey. Helping through the struggles and seeing the progressions. It gives me great SATISFACTION hearing the Pb bell ring and the joy from the MEMBERS when they achieve something they didn’t think was possible.”

Kirk Proto

Co-owner & head of therapies

Kirk is an avid sports fan having played many different sports at various levels in his youth. But having joined the rat race working in investment banking in his twenties, his time playing sports and looking after his health fell by the wayside. In a bid to prioritise his health and wellbeing and find a career path that he was passionate about, he embarked on a path to becoming a Physiotherapist. This helped recapture Kirks love of sports and fitness and combine with his passion to help others in improving their quality of life.

Then came along CrossFit! “I was obsessed after the first workout I completed! CrossFit provides so much more than just fitness.  You are forever learning and developing new skills, challenging what you perceive you are capable of, all in a supportive, friendly environment to achieve the best you.”

Kirk’s philosophy towards Physiotherapy aligns itself with the ethos in CrossFit in that it provides you with the tools to maximise your health and wellbeing.. “Never feel scared to come up to me and ask for advice or help. My job is to help you move well, minimise the risk of injury and most importantly enjoy being part of the BYS family.”

Outside of the gym Kirk enjoys playing cricket and can be found in the St Johns Park (and maybe in the bar afterwards) playing for Burgess Hill CC.

James Williams

James is a farrier by trade and has spent the last 12 years working alongside many world class athletes. With the persistent back pain and general stiffness that came from shoeing horses he tried CrossFit, it has not only made him fitter and stronger but has dramatically reduced the strain he was feeling at work.

When away from the gym you can find him on the rugby pitch coaching under 7’s, this perfectly leads him in to his main roll at BYS.

“My passion lays in educating and encouraging the younger generation about the benefits of movement, exercise and general fitness, and the importance of this for mental and physical well being.”
